Rue Mouffetard

Your Complete Guide to Paris's Historic Market Street

Rue Mouffetard Prices & Fees: What a Visit Really Costs

Prices verified October 2026. Transport fares are official Île-de-France Mobilités 2026 figures; market and shop prices are observed street prices, not fixed tariffs, and change week to week.

Rue Mouffetard is a public street, and that single fact answers the cost question for most visitors: there is nothing to pay to walk it. The money you spend here is money you choose to spend — on food, wine, cheese, a souvenir, or a guided tasting. This page sets out every genuine cost, from the metro fare that gets you to Place Monge to the price of a market cheese tour, and it separates the official, published numbers from the informal stall prices you will simply have to eyeball on the day.

💶 The headline

Entry to Rue Mouffetard: FREE. There is no gate, no ticket, no timed slot and no booking. The street market at the southern end (Square Saint-Médard) is free to browse — you pay only for what you buy. The only genuinely "ticketed" thing here is a third-party guided food, cheese or wine tour.

Is there an entry fee or a ticket?

No. Rue Mouffetard is an ordinary Parisian street in the 5th arrondissement, running from Place de la Contrescarpe down to the Church of Saint-Médard. Nobody owns the entrance, so nobody can charge for it. The morning market stalls that cluster at the southern end are run by independent traders who set up on the pavement and pack away by early afternoon; browsing costs nothing.

Market days and times matter more than money here: stalls operate roughly Tuesday to Sunday, around 08:00–13:30, and the street is quiet on Mondays when the market does not run. If you want the market at full strength, plan around those days — see our market guide and best times to visit.

Getting here: official Paris transport fares 2026

This is the one cost almost every visitor pays. Paris fares are now flat across the region, so the same single-trip price applies from central Paris to the suburbs. The 2026 figures below were set on 1 January 2026 by Île-de-France Mobilités, the regional transport authority.

🎫 Buy before you board

Paper single tickets have been phased out. Load a Navigo Easy card (€2 one-off, then topped up with single fares) or use the Bonjour RATP / Île-de-France Mobilités app on your phone. Buying at the machine keeps you moving; queues at staffed windows on a Saturday morning can eat twenty minutes.

The only real "ticket": guided food, cheese and wine tours

If you want a structured tasting rather than a wander, you buy a tour — not an entrance. These are third-party operator products with dynamic pricing, so treat every figure below as a "from" price and check the operator on the day you book.

Experience Price Length Type
Mouffetard cheese & wine tour (The Tour Guy) from US$69.62 (~€62) 1.5 h, 5–6 cheeses + 3 wines Operator-listed
Wine & cheese tasting with a sommelier (GetYourGuide) from US$69 2 h Operator-listed
Cheese walking tour (Paris Food Tour Co.) €95 pp (12+ tastings) 3 h Observed / own-site
Latin Quarter wine walking tour €89 pp 3 h Observed / own-site
Private cheese expert tour €180–220 pp 2–2.5 h Observed / own-site

How to buy: book online in advance on the operator's own site. Tours commonly meet at Censier–Daubenton or outside the market itself, and the popular Saturday slots sell out several days ahead. If you would rather build your own tasting, our food guide maps the fromageries, bakeries and wine shops you can visit independently.

The non-obvious costs

Nothing on Rue Mouffetard is hidden maliciously, but a few small practicalities catch first-time visitors.

  • Card minimums. Several permanent shops ask for a €10–15 minimum on card payments, and many market stallholders still prefer cash. (Observed.)
  • Free samples are free. Cheese and charcuterie vendors routinely offer a taste at no charge — this is hospitality, not a paid tasting. (Observed.)
  • Toilets and water. Public toilets at Square Saint-Médard are free, and there are street water fountains near Saint-Médard Church and Place de la Contrescarpe.
  • No lockers, no boat rides, no donation boxes. It is a street, not a monument: there is no entry desk to leave a bag at, no river trip to add, and no suggested donation.

⚠️ Market produce prices are not official tariffs

The figures that circulate for Mouffetard's shops are observed market prices and shift with the season: roughly €15–25/kg at a fromagerie, €10–20/kg for fish, about €1.50 for a baguette, €2–5 per macaron. Treat them as a guide, not a menu — and never as a published price list.

How to pay: on the door, online, or pre-booked

Almost everything here is "on the door". The metro is tap-and-go (Navigo Easy or a contactless bank card), the market and shops take cash and, at a minimum, cards, and there is no booking required anywhere to walk the street. The single exception is a guided tour, which is best pre-booked online — and for that you follow the operator's own booking page, linked in the table above.

Currency

Prices are in euros (€). As a rough guide, €1 ≈ US$1.12 (approximate; recompute on the day you travel). Every figure on this page is quoted in the currency the source publishes, so nothing is converted for you.
